Google’s AI Just Made a Phone Call for You. And It Was Surprisingly Normal
Plus: Delta’s price tag disappearing act, Scale AI trims staff post-Meta deal, and China goes full Atlantis to power AI
Hope you’re ready to be impressed and mildly unsettled. Google is rolling out AI-powered phone calls, but this time, it’s not just restaurant bookings or “umm”-filled demos. Their new “AI Calling” feature actually talks to businesses on your behalf. And it’s already live, not someday-in-the-future beta fluff.
Also in today’s brief: Delta is quietly testing algorithmic ticket pricing that makes surge Uber rides look tame, Scale AI’s post-Meta comedown, and why China is putting its GPUs underwater (literally).
Let’s dive in.

Google’s AI Calling Mode Is Real, Polite, and Slightly Terrifying
Google just upgraded Gemini with something big: an AI Calling mode that will speak to real humans over the phone, without you needing to say a word.
Here’s what’s happening:
When users call a business via Google Search, an AI assistant can now wait on hold, talk to the receptionist, and get info like hours, appointments, or inventory.
The feature lives inside Android’s Phone app and Gemini, and was demonstrated calling a pharmacy and asking about cold medicine. It was shockingly natural, with responses like, “uh-huh, got it, thanks,” without tipping off that it was a bot, although it does announce itself as Google AI at the beginning of the call.
Google says it’s using its “Gemini Nano” model locally for privacy and responsiveness.
After the AI gets the information you requested, it text you with an update and the answers to your questions.
It’s currently available for specific types of businesses with straightforward question-answer situations, like pet groomers, dry cleaners, and other shops. When you search for one of these services, Google will display a new “have AI check pricing” prompt under the business listing.
Why this matters for enterprise:
Google just turned every business listing on Search into a semi-automated customer service channel without you opting in. (But businesses can opt-out in their Google settings.)
Whether you’re ready or not, AI is now part of the customer experience pipeline. If your call scripts, inventory info, or hours are inconsistent, AI agents (and customers) will notice.
This lays the groundwork for AI-to-AI communication: Gemini bots calling and negotiating with other bots for B2B transactions or scheduling.
Also announced: Deep Search for Businesses, a new structured data layer where Google will use generative AI to answer consumer queries like “Does this spa offer prenatal massage and do I need to book ahead?” directly in Search-no click required.
Enterprise takeaway:
Your business info, down to the granular operational details, now fuels Google's answer engine and AI phone calls. Time to audit your listings, scripts, and internal databases, or risk AI hallucinating on your behalf.
